The first gold mine operated in the world was in the Kingdoom of Lydia, which is located in Anatolia, Turkey.

 

The first true gold coins in the world were issued in Anatolia in the time of King Croesus around 550 BCKing Midas was the legendary king of Phrygia, who lived in Gordion, Anatolia, between 738 -696 BC. Midas is famous for his donkey ears and for changing anything he touches into gold.

 

During the times of the Anatolian Seljuk State (11th century AD) and the Ottoman Empire (late 15th century – early 20th century AD), gold mining was done in Anatolia and gold coins (called “sikke”) were issued.

 

Today Turkey - with Italy and India  - is one of the three countries, where the largest amounts of gold are processed.

 

In 2010, Turkey's gold mine production is 17 tons and its jewelry manufacturing is 200 tons.
